PROGRAM

Richard Strauss – Enoch Arden, Op. 38

ARTISTS

Matthew Connell – Narrator

Alex Raineri – Piano

Charting a journey filled with dramatic gravitas and whimsical fancies, Richard Strauss’ epic melodrama Enoch Arden, Op. 38 is scored for narrator and piano. It is a setting of a sweeping text by Alfred Tennyson that charts the lifespan of a sailor named Enoch Arden.

Traversing child-like innocence, tragic shipwrecks, and love-triangles, the spoken dialogue is imbued with a commentary on the human condition that encompasses a vivid and profoundly emotional spectrum. Strauss’ incidental music personifies the various characters within the narrative including, at times, the vast and watery enormity of the sea itself.

Opening the 2019 Brisbane Music Festival, actor Matthew Connell (The Boy Castaways, Neighbours) and artistic director Alex Raineri join forces to present this rarely performed work.

Ticket price includes a complementary drink and light refreshments after the performance.
