Johannes Brahms: Clarinet Trio in A minor, Op. 114

Sergei Rachmaninoff: Sonata for Cello and Piano, Op. 19

Presented in partnership with Ensemble Q, ‘The Romantics’ features two towering masterpieces composed at the turn of the twentieth century, written only ten years apart from one another.

An introspective and brooding work, Brahms’ Clarinet Trio of 1891 is striking due to its intensely conversational dialogue between the three instruments. Rachmaninoff’s Sonata for Cello and Piano was composed shortly after the immensely successful Second Piano Concerto and owes much to the latter work in regards to scale and sentiment. Few composers have so deeply explored the cello’s capacity for passionate intensity and arresting tenderness.

Rapidly becoming one of Australia’s premier ensembles, Ensemble Q is known for their dynamic programming and exceptionally high standard of playing. Ensemble in residence at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, co-Artistic Directors Paul & Trish Dean’s enthusiasm and skill has rapidly gained momentum and attracted some of Australia’s and the world’s most exceptional musicians as collaborators and soloists.
