Marian Heckenberg – Double Bass

Marian Heckenberg – Photo: Joe Matthews

Marian Heckenberg is a Master of Music graduate from the University of Southern California where she studied with Paul Ellison and Denis Trembly. While living in Los Angeles Marian gained valuable experience in recording studios such as Capital records and as an orchestral musician. Since her return from the US Marian has enjoyed a hectic career as a contract musician for MSO, ASO, TSO, WASO, OV and QSO.

Marian now focuses on the diverse opportunities of the Qld music scene. Her role as Principal Double Bass with Camerata (Qld’s Chamber Orchestra) enriches her life with an incredible range of performance opportunities. When Marian is not performing she is dedicated to her private students and the young bassists at the Qld Conservatorium of Music where Marian is proud to be part of the double bass faculty. Marian also is energised by giving workshops for education bodies such as Bassworks, QYO, AYO (Young Symphonists).

To extend her skills further Marian lived in Paris for several months while studying with renowned soloist François Rabbath. Music Theatre has also played an interesting part in the fabric of Marian’s development. She has enjoyed the challenges of working in productions such as ‘Phantom’, ‘Dr Zhivago’, ‘Chicago’, ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’, ‘Ladies in Black’, ‘My Fair Lady’ and ‘Westside Story’. She also toured Internationally with ‘Chicago’ and ‘Les Miserables’. Marian proudly performs on an instrument made by her brother, luthier David Heckenberg.
