
Patrick Murphy is Cello Performance Fellow at the School of Music, University of Queensland and cellist of the Tinalley String Quartet. He was a founding member of the Tankstream Quartet, first prize winners in the Melbourne National Chamber Music Competition (2001) and the Osaka International Chamber Music Competition, Japan (2002). The Tankstream also won third prize and the Herald Sun Audience prize in the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition (2003). The Tankstream Quartet went on to study with the Alban Berg Quartet, Walter Levin (LaSalle Quartet) and Milan Skampa (Smetana Quartet). In 2004 they were invited to perform at the Royal Wedding of Crown Prince Frederick and Mary Donaldson in Fredenborg Castle, Copenhagen.
Patrick was a member of the Grainger String Quartet (2007-8) and the Southern Cross Soloists (2011-2017). He has performed extensively with the Australian World Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, and has premiered new works for solo cello by Australian composers Paul Dean and James Ledger. Recent concerto performances have included appearances with Camerata — Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra, the Brisbane Symphony Orchestra, The Metropolitan Orchestra (Sydney), and the University of Queensland Symphony Orchestra. Recent CD releases on ABC Classics include the chamber music of Paul Stanhope (UQ Chamber Players) and the string quartets of Felix Mendelssohn (Tinalley String Quartet).
