
Born and raised in Cairns, Brisbane-based oboist Shana Hoshino began playing the oboe at ten years of age. She completed her Bachelor of Music at the Queensland Conservatorium in 2022 under the tutelage of Eve Newsome and Huw Jones. Upon entering, she was awarded the Nora Baird Scholarship for most outstanding entrance audition, and later received the Rudolph Pekarek Oboe Prize in her final year. In 2021, Shana won 1st Prize in the Open Section of the Australian Double Reed Society National Competition.
During her studies, Shana performed regularly as Principal Oboe in the Conservatorium’s Symphony Orchestra and in 2022, featured as soloist performing Martinu’s Oboe Concerto. From 2020-22, Shana was Principal Oboe of the Queensland Youth Symphony and in 2022, she toured nationally as Principal Oboe with Australian Youth Orchestra (AYO) performing Strauss’ Alpine Symphony with Sir Mark Elder CH CBE. With the AYO, Shana has performed in halls such as Melbourne and Syndey Town Hall, Hamer Hall, QPAC, Old Government House and Melbourne Recital Centre. Shana was also the 2022 Adelaide Symphony Orchestra Fellow (as part of the AYO). She also performs regularly as a casual musician with the Adelaide and Queensland Symphony Orchestras.
Passionate about chamber music, Shana was a founding member of the Acetaria Wind Quintet with whom she performed as guests at the inaugural Sunshine Coast Chamber Music Festival and Brisbane Festival in 2021. They have participated in masterclasses with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Wind Quintet, and Andrew Marriner. During her time at the Conservatorium, Shana performed Beethoven’s Piano Quintet in the “Side by Side” project with Paul Dean and Daniel de Borah, and also performed a chamber version of Peter and the Wolf at the Thomas Dixon Centre with the Queensland Ballet. In 2022, Shana performed in Brisbane and Adelaide with Ensemble Q as Young Artist. A highlight was travelling to and performing Mozart’s Wind Serenade in C minor at the beautiful UKARIA on Mount Barker. With Ensemble Q, Shana also has performed in Opera at Jimbour in 2021 and 2023 as part of Queensland Music Trails.
Shana has played in masterclasses with prominent oboists such as Diana Doherty, Sergio Sanchez, Maurice Bourgue, Ricardo Barbossa, Jeff Crellin; and most recently with Stefan Schilli (Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra), with whom she studied with at a masterclass in Grassau, Bavaria.
Shana is looking forward to her upcoming performances which include Mahler’s Sixth Symphony with the QSO, Verdi’s “Aida” with Opera Queensland, and Wagner’s “The Ring Cycle”.
